Today we focus on the phrasal verb “get into.” In everyday English, it means start or become involved in something: a job, a study area, or a hobby. You can say “I want to get into software,” “She got into teaching after university,” or “Lately I’m getting into jazz.” It also has other common uses: “get into a car” means enter a car, and “get into trouble” means have problems.
In IELTS Speaking, “get into” sounds natural when you talk about plans and interests. It helps fluency because it is short and clear. In IELTS Writing, especially Task 2, it is informal. Use formal verbs instead: “enter the field of medicine,” “pursue a career in finance,” “take up distance running,” “begin a degree in economics.” In reports for Task 1, avoid it and use precise verbs.
Here is a clear band ladder so you can grow your answer.
Band 5: “I want to get into business.”
Short, basic, no reason.
Band 6: “I want to get into business because the pay is good.”
Adds a reason, still simple.
Band 7: “I hope to get into business after university because I enjoy solving practical problems.”
Clear goal, time phrase, and reason.
Band 8: “I got into environmental science at university after a project changed my view of climate issues.”
Good past detail and cause.
Band 9: “I got into linguistics when a field study on accents sparked my interest, and since then I’ve pursued it through internships and small research projects.”
Cause, timeline, and sustained action.
Common mistakes: writing “get into to study X” is wrong; say “get into studying X” or better “start studying X.” Do not use it in formal essay lines; choose “pursue,” “enter,” or “specialise in.” In Speaking, link the sounds naturally: many speakers say it like “ged into.”
Quick practice. Change an informal Speaking line into a formal Writing line. Speaking: “I want to get into law.” Writing: “I plan to pursue a career in law.” Speaking: “I got into design last year.” Writing: “I began studying design last year.”
Use “get into” to sound natural in your Speaking answers, but switch to formal verbs in Writing. Keep your style fit for the task and your score will rise.
